At StreetSense our instructors are experienced in dealing with  the dynamics surrounding Sexual Assault Trauma Syndrome. This is a vital component to any well structured Self Defense course that are commonly overlooked when teaching women to defend themselves.

Self Defense courses that do not address Sexual Assault Trauma Syndrome can damage women who are survivors of sexual assault emotionally and psychologically. There are many women who are survivors of sexual assault who attend Self Defense courses in order to aid in the healing process. Our instructors are sensitive to this fact and empower the survivor to fight back.

Our courses are a lot more than just learning Self Defense techniques. We sensitively deal with the emotions and flashbacks that often arise during the courses. We teach survivors that they are strong and that the incident was not their fault. We empower them to focus on overcoming their fears and past trauma and coach them to feel that they are in control of their lives and that they can effectively protect themselves. Mental Toughness training teaches participants how to throw the switch and aggressively defend themselves during an attack.

We know that the empowerment of the survivor radically assists in the healing process due to the survivors ability to deal with their fears in the role-playing scenarios. Reality Based Padded Attacker Training  is used to teach students to utilize simple and effective Self Defence concepts to incapacitate an attacker long enough to safely escape.

Another benefit of our courses is the mutual support offered by our instructors and those attending the course. The presence of other people cheering them on during the Padded Assailant scenarios and the group support generated by the course gives them the courage and strength to confront their fears. It is this group bonding process that enhances the group experience in much the same way as is accomplished by military units or law enforcement training. We encourage survivors to seek counselling and support. People who receive professional counselling generally recover from trauma much more quickly.
