The first time I had the fortune of training with Street Sense Safety & Security was early 2010 on a high risk security operators course offered By Modus Concepts of Calgary, Alberta. From the onset of the training provided by Tim and Kerry I could easily see that this was going to be unlike any training in hand to hand combat and self defense that I had received either with the Military or acquired in the private sector. Their instruction was clear, concise and to the point. They were able to take a handful of individuals over a short period of time and teach the basic fundamentals and importance of  unarmed defense against “attackers” either armed or unarmed. Also important to note is that they advocated that “the best defense to an attack is to be able to avoid confrontation altogether.”

As an owner of a private security company I find the need for practical, realistic training is of the utmost importance to operate professionally and effectively. So whether you are new to the private security industry or you are an experienced security officer looking to brush up on your physical defense skills you need look no further than StreetSense Safety & Security.

"You guys were so awesome with them!! When we bring new people in there is always that concern that they won't connect with the kids or understand them and be able to work with them but really, all three of you were just FANTASTIC!! I cannot express that enough!! To watch the kids open up to you as quickly as they did was just sooooo cool. Really, I cannot thank you enough for the confidence you have built in the students over the last few days...they had such a good time."

"Hi Kerry & Tim,

I just got your email when I was writing this one. I was in a bit if a hurry to leave after the course and I didn't get a chance to properly thank you or offer you some feedback, so I'm writing instead.  It was clear that being in that suit was hot and tiring work.  This was one course where the instructors worked harder than the students. I must admit I had fairly high expectations going into your course, but you still managed to impress me in a number of ways:  first, by the simplicity of the techniques you taught, the fact that they were all based on already very familiar motions and gestures, and were all strictly gross motor.

Secondly, I was impressed by how successfully you manage to create an adrenaline-stressed situation with which we had to deal.  It truly felt real to me, and you will remember I had a number of the symptoms of adrenaline you told us about. (I still can't remember what I did in that first scenario, so I'm hoping I can see in the video)  As a result of going through these scenarios with you, I now have a much greater level of confidence I could act quickly enough in a real incident, in spite of the fear.

Thirdly, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed myself, and how funny and entertaining your presentations were. Tara and Caitlin in particular appreciated the humour, and found it was really effective in making this course not as scary-serious as it could have been. Anyway, gentlemen, it's me who should thank you for last night.  Your course can be life changing in the peace and security it brings, as well as life saving. I hope you realize that and derive the appropriate satisfaction."

“Excellent approach, philosophy and self-defense techniques. Great methods of instructing and just the right amount of theory to practical ratio. Appreciated the energy and encouragement.”

“Very knowledgeable and professional, well done.”

“Excellent! Clear instruction, motivated and dedicated with real-life experience.”

“The physical instruction from Kerry and Tim was excellent. The course is a hostile environment program and if I train as I have been taught; then I will fight how I have been taught; whether at home or overseas. As Daniel made clear throughout the course, better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6! Overall, an excellent course.”

“Excellent instructional techniques, focused and very approachable.”

“Very serious about what they teach due to the nature of their jobs and still managed to keep the course enjoyable; well done.”

“Enjoyed the self-defense classes and nice to see (well hear) Kerry getting stuck-in during the resistance to interrogation phase.”

“No suggestions keep doing what you are doing, great course, loved the realism and the adrenaline inoculation

"I was a safari guide and hunter in Africa (botswana) for 10 years. I have battled to settle as I had an attack at 17 years old when I lived in Ottawa and am very afraid of city life.  I felt comfortable with game in Africa as they were more predictable..................Anyhow I loved the course and have spoken to many women about it..... you are incredible....what you do to make women feel empowered and less scared to walk streets....thank you so much...... really!"

Good day Tim,
How are you and Kerry doing, hope all is well for
the both of you.
You may remember me, I trained with the both of you
back Febuary 2009 in the HECPO course. I found your
training to be unlike any other I have done in the past.
I have done MMA training for over 10 years now, and
have been instructing for 4. I do love the MMA
training but I have not fought in some time and do
not plan to. The topic of training pratical street
defence has been on my mind for some time Since the
course I have practiced the tactics we did while on
the course and really appreciate them.

My 19 year old daughter and I attended the 4 hour self-defence course offered here at the college on Saturday.  It was instructed by two men (Tim and Kerry) from StreetSense Safety and Security.  I want to commend you for offering the course and finding these two men to instruct it.  I have taken self-defence courses before and found this one to be far superior to all of them.  The men were extremely capable, knowledgeable, and a whole lot of fun as well.  They taught simple and very effective techniques in an enjoyable and enthusiastic manner.  They had the group of us laughing and working hard at the same time.   They presented common scenarios and practical reactions along with tactics to build our confidence levels.  It was truly amazing to see what they accomplished with us in a few short hours.

Kerry, you and Tim are amazing guys. Serious amazing. It was the best class I have ever taken! Thank you for your kindness and support during the training, as you know how nervous I was. Once I got to hit you padded men I was fine and got right into it! That felt great. Can't say enough good about you, Tim and your teaching style. What you guys are doing is such a service. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Dear Kerry,

Words cannot describe the empowerment that both you and Tim have provided the staff at the Calgary Military Families Resource Centre after our recent Self Defense training. As a staff of all women we walked away with the confidence, strength and renewed awareness of our surroundings. We definitely feel prepared for whatever comes our way!

The training was an amazing experience that we are still talking about today and often find ourselves yearning for more. Our sincere thanks and "salute" to you both. You have turned this group of women into a force to be reckoned with

StreetSense Safety and Security has taught restraint/control and security training for our staff since 2001. We at the Student Union, University of Calgary operate a 900 person capacity bar and restaurant, Macewan Hall concert venue, accommodating over 2100 patrons and a ballroom with capacity for over 800. Throughout our relationship I have found the StreetSense staff to be extremely professional and knowledgeable. The training program is very complete and our staff found it interesting and informative. I would highly recommend this service to anyone operating a similar business

Dear Kerry,

I would like to take the time to say Thank You for coming to Bow Valley College and giving a one-day seminar to the ladies in the Client Services and Registration area. The class was excellent.

The training that you provided to us was received very highly and with immense praise. The ladies would like you to come back and provide them with more training and resources.

It was also appreciated that you were able to provide a security audit for the College and showing us how to turn Bow Valley College into a more secure and safe environment to work in.

The Graduate Student's Association of the University of Calgary in collaboration with StreetSense Safety and Security has offered the graduate students self defense courses since 2009.

In these workshops, students learned the truth about how crimes and violence occur. They were taught how to recognize the signs of impending violence and how criminals choose and stalk their victims. They also learned simple methods to reduce risk in their lives and how to lower their profiles as a potential victim.

From the feedback, we see that these workshops are a huge success. Comments include "Awesome", "Fantastic", and "Exceeded my expectations". The GSA now offers StreetSense Safety courses 4 times per year.
